Air India Delhi-San Francisco non-stop flight with 225 passengers and 19 crew members onboard was diverted to Russia’s Krasnoyarsk International Airport (KJA) on Thursday due to “technical reason”.

Why was the Air India Delhi-San Francisco flight diverted to Russia?

The airline said that AI183 which took off from Delhi for San Francisco made a “precautionary landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport (KJA) in Russia after the cockpit crew detected a potential issue in the cargo hold area."

Soon after, the passengers and crew members of the flight were safely disembarked and taken to the terminal building for further process, Air India said on Friday.

‘Air India concerned about passengers’

In a post on X, Air India further said that it is concerned about the passengers of its Delhi-San Francisco flight diverted to Krasnoyarsk Krai and is making speedy arrangements for a ferry flight.

“All of us at Air India are concerned about the passengers and staff and are making every effort possible to operate the ferry flight as soon as possible,” Air India said.

The airline further said that it is all making all efforts possible to ensure the health, safety, and security of all passengers stuck in Russia.

According to a report by The Times of India, the pilots of Boeing 777p-200 long range (VT-ALG) operating as AI183 Delhi-San Francisco decided to divert and land in Russia after getting an “engine indicating and crew alerting system (EICAS)” message for cargo fire warning.

Similar incident with AI flight on same route last year

However, the AI Delhi-San Francisco flight being diverted to Russia is not the first time. On June 6, 2023, another plane on the same route (Delhi-SFO) was diverted to the Russian port city of Magadan after a technical glitch in one of the B777-200LR engines.

The aircraft was carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew onboard at the time. They were then shifted to makeshift accommodation in a school, where they remained for two days.

A replacement flight, with food and other essentials, subsequently was sent from Mumbai which took the passengers to San Francisco.

Now it remains to be seen how long will it take to safely fly the passengers stranded in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk International Airport to their destination.
