A weigh-in is a normal process in wrestling but ever since Vinesh Phogat failed to make weight due to being overweight by just 100 grams there has been a renewed focus on the whole activity. While Phogat tried her best including cutting her hair to make weight, Aman Sehrawat, the wrestler who won Olympics bronze on Friday, lost 4.6kg in just one night to stay eligible for the 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024.
It’s important to note that while Vinesh is 29, Aman is only 21, and younger people tend to have a faster metabolism. Also, the tendency to lose weight differs from a body to body.

In Aman’s case, he was 4.5kg more than the permissible limit on Thursday night after his semi-final defeat which assured him a place in the bronze medal match.
With the weigh-in now being held on both days of competition, Aman and his team had 10 hours to lose the excess 4.5kg but they successfully managed to cut down 4.6kg.
Here’s how they did it:
The first step in the process was a one-and-a-half-hour mat session during which Aman was involved in standing wrestling followed by a one-hour hot-bath session.
After some wrestling and a hot bat, Aman checked into the gym and ran on the tread for one hour non-stop.
He was then afforded a 30-minute break followed by five sessions of a five-minute sauna bath.
One of the preferred methods of losing eight is a sauna bath and running in the gym as it leads to excess sweating and helps in cutting weight.
At this stage, Aman was found to be still 900 grams above the permissible limit.
After being given a light massage, the wrestler was asked to do light jogging which was followed by five 15-minute training sessions.
The final step saw him lose the excess weight and he now weighed 56.9kg - 100 grams less than the permissible limit.
To give him energy and keep him hydrated, Aman was given lukewarm water with lemon and honey and some coffee during the weight-loss process.
He also did not sleep during the whole process.
“I watched videos of wrestling bouts, the whole night. We kept checking his weight every hour. We didn’t sleep the whole night, not even during the day,” said India national wrestling team coach Virender Dahiya.
“Weight cutting is routine, normal for us but there was tension, a lot of tension due to what happened the other day (with Vinesh). We could not let slip another medal,” said Dahiya.
Aman’s hard work finally paid off on the mat as he defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz on Friday to become India’s youngest-ever Olympic medallist.
