In weeks since President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential contest, Vice President Kamala Harris has caught up with Donald Trump.

Now, Harris and Trump tied as she has eroded the Republican nominee’s lead, according to a poll of polls by election analysis site 538.

For months, Trump enjoyed a significant lead over Biden in polls. His prospects at winning further rose after the presidential debate in June in which Biden’s performance was a colossal disaster. Even as Trump appealed to his base on issues like immigration and crime, Biden struggled to make his case. At multiple times in the debate, he appeared to lose his train of thoughts and struggled to complete his sentences as he spoke in a raspy voice.

Long-running concerns over his mental and physical ability to see through another term peaked and Biden was forced to drop out in favour of Harris.

Harris stands better than Trump, shows poll of polls

While the formal conclusion of the 538’s poll of polls is that Harris and Trump are tied, Harris is leading if you take out the margin of error.

Harris has the support of 45 per cent of the voters and Trump has the support of 43.5 per cent, according to the 538’s poll of polls.

As the poll of polls has a margin of error of 1.5 per cent, the 538 has formally declared the two as tied as Harris’ lead is of 1.5 per cent.

The poll of polls is notable as it has only considered polls that were conducted after Biden withdrew from the contest and Harris took over. Sever polls of polls conducted in recent days have also factored in the polls that were conducted when Biden was the candidate and Harris was merely a hypothetical consideration. In such cases, the results were skewed in favour of Trump as Harris was never on an equal footing.

The 538 said that Harris has done 3 per cent better in polls that were conducted after Biden withdrew and she formally became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

The 538 further said that Harris is doing better than Trump among ’likely voters’ — voters who have not decided if they would vote. While it did not give figures, it noted that there is evidence that likely voters are more Democratic-leaning than Republican-leaning.
