Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic nomination for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday (August 2).
Now, Harris is interviewing six candidates for her vice-presidential pick as she prepares for a tour of seven key battleground states.
Harris campaign celebrates nomination
The online voting process formally concludes on Monday (August 5), however, the Vice President’s campaign is celebrating since she has already crossed the threshold of delegate votes needed for the nomination.
In a virtual event resembling a telethon, campaign officials monitored the delegate-counting process, the outcome of which was a foregone conclusion. The Democratic National Committee did not disclose specific delegate vote counts or state-by-state breakdowns.
Harris faced no challengers for the nomination, quickly consolidating Democratic support after President Joe Biden’s endorsement.
Despite the certainty of her nomination, Democrats still plan a ceremonial state-by-state roll call during the party’s convention, traditionally used to choose the nominee.
Running mate interviews picking pace
With the required delegate votes in hand, Harris is interviewing six potential running mates this weekend. Her shortlist includes Governors Andy Beshear of Kentucky, JB Pritzker of Illinois, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Tim Walz of Minnesota, along with Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, AP cited sources familiar with her selection process as saying.

Shapiro and Kelly are considered front-runners, emerging from an initial vetting of about a dozen candidates.
President Biden, speaking to reporters Friday, confirmed discussions with Harris about her VP search but refrained from offering specific advice on the qualities she should seek in a running mate, stating, “I’ll let her work that out.”
Harris is likely to announce her running mate by Tuesday (August 6), ahead of the launch of her battleground state tour, which begins in Philadelphia.
