Tim Walz, the US Democratic vice presidential nominee on Wednesday (August 14) confirmed that he has agreed to debate his Republican rival, JD Vance. The debate is set to happen on October 1, one of the dates for a debate proposed by CBS News.

CBS News extended invitations to both Walz and the Republican vice-presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance, offering two dates in September and two in October for a debate to be held in New York City.

Walz promptly accepted the invitation, posting on social media, “See you on October 1, JD.” A campaign official for Kamala Harris, who recently ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, confirmed Walz’s acceptance, stating, “Harris for President has accepted CBS’ invitation to a Vice-Presidential Candidate Debate on 1 October. Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance – if he shows up.”

Vance, however, has yet to commit to the 1 October date. In an interview with Fox News, the Ohio senator said, “I strongly suspect we’re going to be there on October the 1st.”

Vance also said he wanted to debate Walz more than once. “I actually think we should do more than one debate. So hopefully we’re going to see him on 1 October, but hopefully we’re going to see him either before or after that, because I think it’s important for the American people to actually see us discuss our views,” Vance said.

Trump named Vance as his running mate last month, following Biden’s departure from the race and Harris’s subsequent elevation to the Democratic ticket. Walz was selected as Harris’s running mate shortly thereafter.

Harris and Trump have agreed to a presidential debate on ABC News on 10 September, marking the second presidential debate of the year, and the first one between Harris and Trump.

The first, between Trump and Biden in June, saw the President’s performance widely criticised, eventually leading to his decision to withdraw from the race.
