Hours after a court ordered their immediate release, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi were arrested by the country’s premier anti-corruption agency in a separate case. This means the two would continue to be in jail.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday evening arrested Imran and Bushra in a separate matter related to alleged corruption in the long-running ‘Toshakhana Case’ against them.

The Express Tribune reported that a NAB team arrived at the Adiala Jail and arrested the two before they were released in the marriage case. The paper further reported that it was also expected that investigators could arrest Imran in another case related to nationwide violence by his supporters in May last year.

Earlier in the day, the Islamabad District and Sessions Court had ordered their immediate release after they had challenged their sentencing in the case of having an illegal marriage. In February, the two were convicted and sentenced to seven-year in prison each.

In all, Imran, the chief of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf party (PTI), has more than 100 cases against him and has been in jail for more than a year. The ‘Toshakhana Case’ in which he has been arrested now refers to the alleged corruption in his dealings with toshakhana, the government repository where gifts received by government leaders and officials in their official capacity are deposited. It is alleged that he and Bushra bought back these gifts at low prices and sold them at much higher prices to make huge personal profits at the cost of exchequer.

Imran has alleged that he is the victim of a conspiracy of Pakistan’s military and intelligence apparatus which is in league with the country’s political powers opposed to him. He also named the United States as being part of the conspiracy to oust him from power. In 2022, Imran was unceremoniously ousted as the Pakistani premier in a trust vote. He blamed it on the then-Opposition, the military-intelligence establishment, and the United States, and he and his supporters have continued the tirade since then.
