Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential bid. This move further marks her departure from the Democratic party that she sought to represent four years ago. Gabbard is aligning herself with the former president’s criticisms of Vice President Kamala Harris and the tumultuous Afghanistan War withdrawal.

On Monday (August 26), Gabbard appeared with Trump in Detroit at the National Guard Association of the United States on the third anniversary of the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Gabbard heaps praises for Trump

The National Guard veteran who completed two tours of duty in the Middle East before representing Hawaii in the US House, said that the GOP nominee Trump “understands the grave responsibility that a president and commander-in-chief bears for every single one of our lives.”

She praised Trump for “having the courage to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies and partners alike in the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort.”

Gabbard also hit out at the Democratic White House for the US now “facing multiple wars on multiple fronts in regions around the world and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before.”

A response to DNC 2024 speeches?

Gabbard’s praise of Trump’s willingness to deal with dictators, and their show of reverence to slain troops comes at the heel of pointed attacks made against the Republican presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) 2024.

At the convention, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris attacked Trump for calling American war casualties “suckers” and “losers”, an allegation made by Trump’s former chief of staff.

Trump and Harris are competing to gain an advantage on military issues, discussing not just who would keep America safe, but also who would best support the needs of veterans and who holds the US armed forces in the respect they deserve.

Both are stressing their diplomatic and foreign policy successes. They are also surrounding themselves with veterans to vouch for them, including their running mates, who have engaged in their own intense back-and-forth about military service.
