Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is seeing a rise in popularity among Americans as the Democratic National Convention approaches, according to a recent poll.

According to The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey, released on Monday, approximately 48 per cent of US adults now view Harris very or somewhat favorably.

This marks a 9-point increase from her 39 per cent favorability rating at the start of summer, before President Biden withdrew from the presidential race and endorsed her as his successor. Harris’s current rating also surpasses Biden’s pre-exit favorability of 38 per cent, added the survey.

Moreover, Harris’s favorability rating currently exceeds that of former President Trump, who stands at 41 per cent.

The Associated Press also highlighted that this boost in Harris’s popularity coincides with more Americans forming opinions about her since her elevation to the top of the Democratic ticket. The percentage of those who don’t know enough about her to form an opinion has halved, from 12 per cent in June to 6 per cent now.

The poll suggests that Harris’s new role has energised the Democratic Party following a period of uncertainty before Biden’s exit. Favorability for Harris has seen modest increases among Democrats, independents, women, and adults under 30.

However, there has been no significant change in her favorability among Black or Hispanic adults, two important demographics for the Democratic Party, added the survey.

Meanwhile, Harris has also closed the gap with Trump in numerous national and swing-state polls.

According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s national polling average, she has a 1.8 percentage point lead over Trump based on an aggregate of 120 polls.

A CBS News/YouGov survey, released Sunday, found Harris edged Trump out nationally, 51 to 48 per cent, while the two were in a dead heat across seven battleground states.

The new AP-NORC poll was conducted from August 8-12 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel. It has a margin of sampling error of 3.8 percentage points.
