At least two people were killed and 12 others went missing on Saturday after a tunnel bridge collapsed due to a flash flood and mudslide in southwest China’s Sichuan province.

The collapse occurred around 3:30 am at the section between Kangding City and Luding County on the Ya’an-Kangding expressway, causing three vehicles with six people to plunge into a gorge in the mountainous terrain, local authorities told Xinhua news agency.

Twelve people were also reported missing following the bridge collapse, according to the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture’s publicity department.

Authorities said that a search and rescue operation was underway in Ridi village after a “sudden mountain torrent and landslide” destroyed homes, resulting in the deaths of at least two people on Friday night. Two individuals have been rescued and hospitalized so far. The Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched approximately 300 rescuers to the site.

China has seen many natural disasters this summer, many linked to extreme weather.

In May, a highway in southern China collapsed after days of rain, leaving 48 dead.

China is the world’s largest emitter of the greenhouse gases that scientists say drive climate change and make extreme weather more intense.
