US Vice President Kamala Harris has managed to gain a narrow lead against Former US President Donald Trump in two major polls released before the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll has found that Harris has 49 per cent of support among the registered voters who were surveyed. Trump, on the other hand, was supported by 45 per cent of respondents. The rest of the 5 per cent said that they would back someone else.

Meanwhile, in the CBS and YouGov polls which were also released on Sunday, the Democratic presidential nominee had a three-point lead over her Republican counterpart. While 51 per cent of the respondents said that they would support Harris, Trump was supported by 48 per cent of the participants.

This marked a major improvement in comparison to how her boss US President Joe Biden performed in these polls. The last polls conducted by Ipsos showed Biden and Trump tied at 46 per cent. The POTUS had to end his re-election bid amid concerns over his age and mental acuity.

America is ’excited again’

Interestingly, the Ipsos polls also found more enthusiasm among American voters when it comes to the upcoming Harris vs Trump match-up. 44 per cent of respondents expressed excitement over the upcoming November polls. Last time, only 28 per cent of people said that they were looking forward to the Biden vs Trump race.

The polls also favoured Harris’s VP pick and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz over Trump’s pick, Ohio Senator, JD Vance. The poll found that 39 per cent of respondents said they either have a “strongly” or “somewhat” positive view of Walz while 32 per cent said the same of Vance.

Harris has managed to close the gap between her and Trump in a short span of time. Earlier this month, The New York Times/Siena College found that Harris has taken the lead over Trump in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, garnering 50 per cent support to Trump’s 46 per cent in the hypothetical matchup.

Harris’ numbers mark a significant improvement when compared to President Biden’s performance in the same swing state. In the NYT/Siena polls conducted earlier this year, Biden garnered 45 per cent support to Trump’s 48 per cent in Pennsylvania. Polls from April and early May, however, showed the president leading his GOP rival in Michigan (47 per cent to 46 per cent) but trailing Trump in Wisconsin (46 per cent to 47 per cent).
