India got their 2024 Paris Paralympics campaign underway on Thursday with a larger focus on para-shuttlers. In an all-Indian mixed doubles contest, Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan defeated Suhas Yathiraj and Palak Kohli 21-14, 21-17. In another mixed doubles contest, Sivaraj Solaimalai and Nithya Sre Sivan went down to USA’s Miles Krajewski and Jayci Simon 21-23, 11-21.

Sukant Kadam tasted success in the men’s singles group stage match against Mohd Amin Burhanuddin of Malaysia. Sukant went down from a game to beat the Malaysian 17-21, 21-15, 22-20 in the SL4 category in his Olympic debut. In the same category, Suhas Yathiraj produced a clinical effort to defeat Indonesia’s Hikmat Ramdani 21-7, 21-5.

It was, however, heartbreak for Aruna Singh Tanwar as she lost to Turkey’s Nurcihan Ekinici with a 0-19 scoreline. In in the initial stages of her bout, Aruna sustained a right knee injury and fell onto the mat. However, the injury did not stop her as she continued to fight on one leg before eventually going down.

In women’s track cycling, Jyoti Gaderiya finished the women’s C1-3 3000m individual pursuit qualification with a timing of 4:53.929. Jyoti, however, failed to qualify for the medal match.
