Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, has approved talks over the regime’s nuclear programme with the United States.

Iran is considered to be at the threshold of developing a nuclear weapon. The US public assessments have said that Iran may develop a bomb within months of getting the final go-ahead from Khamenei.

After former US President Donald Trump quit the 2015 Nuclear Deal, efforts to revive any deal have failed. Now, Khamenei has said that talks may be held with the United States but the “enemy” must not be trusted.

“We do not have to pin our hope to the enemy. For our plans, we should not wait for approval by the enemies. It is not contradictory to engage the same enemy in some places, there’s no barrier,” said Khamenei in a video message.

Following the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iran considers the United States its principal enemy and calls it ’the Great Satan'.

In 2018, former US President Donald Trump exited the 2015 nuclear deal Iran which capped the Iranian nuclear enrichment in lieu of lifting of sanctions. After quitting the deal, the Trump started the ‘maximum pressure’ strategy under which he ramped up sanctions on Iran which in turn started more nuclear enrichment. Now, the conditions are such that Iran may now develop a bomb within months.

In April, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said that Iran is “weeks rather than months” away from having enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear weapon. Once it has the enriched material, it may develop a bomb within months.

The Joe Biden administration of the United States held talks to revive the deal but the talks were not fruitful. Now, there may be another chance for talks as the current Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, had campaigned on a platforms that called for nuclear talks with the West. As Khamenei has greenlit the talks, it is to be seen whether Pezeshkian goes ahead with talks.
