ISIS claims responsibility for Muscat mosque shooting that killed 1 Indian

The Indian Embassy in Muscat on Wednesday said that it is keeping a close watch on all the developments related to the shooting at a mosque that killed one Indian national and injured two others. Meanwhile, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Shiite mosque.

The mosque attack came at a time when Shiites were marking Ashura, an annual day of mourning that commemorates the seventh-century death in the battle of Imam Hussein, regarded by the sect as the rightful successor to the Prophet Mohammed.

In a statement, the Indian Embassy said, “Embassy is closely following up the well being of the resident Indian community in the aftermath of the shooting incident in Muscat city on July 15. The Embassy conveys its sympathies with the families of those who have tragically lost their lives in this incident.”

Furthermore, the Indian Envoy to Oman, Amit Narang spoke to the families of the victims. The victim who died from the attack has been identified as Basha Jan Ali Hussain. The Embassy has offered full support to repatriate the mortal remains of Hussain back to India.

ISIS claims responsibility

On Tuesday evening, the terror group announced that three “suicide attackers” opened fire on worshippers at the mosque. They engaged in a gun battle with Omani security forces that lasted through the night until morning, according to Reuters. The group additionally released a video purportedly showing the attack on the Telegram messaging app.

The three gunmen behind the attack were killed and police officers have “concluded the procedures for dealing with the shooting,” it said.

It gave a toll of six killed, including a police officer. It said 28 people “from various nationalities” were wounded, including rescuers and paramedics.

The foreign ministry in Islamabad said at least four Pakistanis were killed.
