Amid the brewing tensions in the Middle East, the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami warned that Israel cannot advance its goals by carrying out assassinations. The provocative remarks from the Iranian general came while he was addressing a ceremony which was held to commemorate the national day of journalists in Iran, Mehr News reported.

He went on to slam the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, and said that the “Zionist regime was born in the cradle of terror and does not possess any of the constituent elements of a nation.” The tensions in the Middle East reached an all-time high following the assassination of the head of Hamas’ political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh.

While Israel did not claim responsibility for the attack, both Iran and Hamas have blamed the Jewish nation for the attack. Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Force did take responsibility for killing the Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.

“The Zionist regime has created a whirlwind of fire around itself and thinks that it can prevent a nation from obtaining nuclear energy by assassinating its nuclear scientists. But when they face a decisive response, they realize they miscalculated,” the Iranian general exclaimed.

IRGC refutes NYT reports, saying Haniyeh was killed due to a short-range projectile

On Saturday, the IRGC stated that they maintained that Haniyeh was killed due to a short-range projectile. The statement came days after the New York Times reported that bombs were deployed in Haniyeh’s guesthouse to assassinate him.

“This action was designed and implemented by the Zionist regime and supported by the criminal government of America,” the statement reads. Citing their investigation, the IRGC made it clear that the operation was carried out by firing a short-range projectile with a warhead of about 7 kilograms.

The Iranian group maintained that the strong explosion occurred outside Haniyeh’s guest hours. The IRGC also emphasised that “it would avenge the blood of Haniyeh,” adding that “the terrorist Zionist regime would definitely face severe punishment at the appropriate time and place.”

Last week, The Telegraph released a bombshell report in which two top Iranian officials admitted that Israel’s Mossad recruited IRGC agents who deployed bombs in three rooms in the guesthouse where Haniyeh was residing. However, the report is not verified by Iran or Israel.
