An Israeli airstrike on a vehicle in the occupied West Bank killed a commander of Hamas’ Tulkarm brigade on Saturday (August 3), according a report by Hamas media.

Additionally, WAFA, the Palestinian news agency, stated that four other men were also killed in the attack. According to the WAFA report, which cited health officials, the identities of the other individuals were not clear.

Tulkarm Brigade commander killed

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), at around 6:40 am local time, put out a statement on their Telegram channel. The initial report relayed by the forces said “An IDF aircraft struck a vehicle and terrorist cell operating within the area of Tulkarm.”

The Israeli military said that further details would follow.

Hamas media later reported that a vehicle carrying fighters had been struck and that one of the commanders of its Tulkarm brigades was killed. This Brigade has forces from various Palestinian factions.

According to various reports, Sheikh Haitham Balidi, a leader of Tulkarm’s Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades, is believed to be one of the five people killed by Israel in this strike.

Violence in West Bank

Violence in the West Bank had been increasing even before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began on October 7, and it has continued to escalate. This surge in violence includes frequent Israeli raids in the West Bank, which is one of the territories sought by Palestinians for a future state.

Tensions have been running high across the region, with the recent assassination of Hamas’ leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Teheran, followed by an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed senior Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr.

Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of carrying out the assassination and have promised to retaliate. Israel has not confirmed or denied its involvement in the incident.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has also vowed to seek revenge.
