US President Joe Biden said he is grateful that his Republican presidential rival Donald Trump is safe after a shooting incident at the former US President’s rally in Pennsylvania. While speaking from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, two hours after the shooting, Biden called the whole ordeal “sick” and said that “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence.”

The president also expressed his wish to speak to Trump soon. The former president was the target of an assassination attempt while he was addressing a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday (local time). Shortly after the sound of a gunshot echoed in the skies of Pennsylvania, Trump can be seen escorted by the Secret Services with his ears covered in blood.

A local prosecutor said the suspected gunman and at least one attendee died in the incident. The Secret Service also noted that two spectators were critically injured. While reacting to the incident, Biden called for the country to unite irrespective of where their ideologies lie.

“We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this,” he said. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the former president said that he was “doing fine” and is being treated at a medical facility.

Biden thanks law enforcement

The American president was in Delaware attending church when the shooting occurred. He was briefed about the shooting by Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, ABC News reported.

“I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as to the situation based on what we know now,” Biden told reporters in hastily assembled remarks.

“I have tried to get a hold of Donald, he’s with his doctors. Apparently, he’s doing well. I plan on talking to him shortly,” he added. He went on to condemn political violence that has engulfed the United States.

“But the bottom line is, the – the Trump rally was a rally that he should’ve been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem,” Biden said. “But the idea, the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this, is just unheard of, it’s just not appropriate.”

“We – everybody, everybody must condemn it,” Biden said. “Everybody.”

Reactions from lawmakers pour in

Reaction from lawmakers began pouring in on social media who said they were sending prayers to Trump. “Kelly and I are praying for President Trump and all the attendees of the campaign rally today in Pennsylvania, and we send our gratitude to the law enforcement who responded at the scene,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement.

“I have been briefed by law enforcement and am continuing to monitor the developments. This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned,” he furthered.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also condemned the whole ordeal.  “I am horrified by what happened at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania and relieved that former President Trump is safe. Political violence has no place in our country,” the Democratic leader wrote on X, formally known as Twitter.
