Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff released a statement in which he acknowledged that he had an affair during his first marriage. The confirmation from the second gentleman came days after the details of the affairs were published by British tabloid Daily Mail.

Emhoff had the affair before his relationship with the presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Harris. “During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side,” the second gentleman said in a statement.

Earlier this week Daily Mail reported that Emhoff had a relationship with one of his then-young daughter’s teachers, which resulted in the end of his first marriage. Interestingly, the relationship and the circumstances around it were known four years ago to Joe Biden’s vetting committee while Harris was herself going through the running mate process before being picked for the ticket, CNN reported.

Harris was aware of the affair

While Emhoff’s affair with the teacher ended years before he began dating Harris, a source close to the matter told CNN that he told the vice president about the affair before they got married. In the bombshell report, the Daily Mail mentioned that the woman became pregnant during the affair and according to a close friend she “did not keep the child”.

Meanwhile, the second gentleman’s first wife Kerstin Emhoff came out in support of her ex-husband. “Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago. He is a great father to our kids and continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together," she said in a separate statement.

It is pertinent to note that Kerstin supported Kamala when Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance slammed the latter for not having children of her own. At that time, Kerstin defended Harris as “loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present” and said she was grateful Harris was a part of their blended family.

“These are baseless attacks. For over 10 years, since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and I,” she said in a statement in July. Emoff’s first marriage ended back in 2009 and he married Harris in 2014, when he was working as an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles and she was California attorney general. The two children he shared with his first wife are now adults.
