As Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has completed vetting potential vice presidential picks, the final announcement is set to take place next week.

The law firm hired to vet the picks, Covington & Burling, has submitted the findings and the search is now in its final phase, according to The New York Times.

As the vetting has been completed, the USA Today has reported that Harris will interview the finalist candidates over the weekend.

The announcement is expected by Tuesday. Just after the announcement, Harris and her running mate would go on a campaign tour of battleground states.

Unlike conventional presidential campaigns in which the search takes months, the Harris campaign has had to finalise the running mate within a week as she took over the presidential contest from President Joe Biden quite late.

Commentators have said that the choice of the running mate would be hugely consequential to Harris’ campaign as while a good campaign could bring in a new chunk of voters and ensure years of good counsel if they win, a bad choice could hamper the campaign the way Sarah Palin tanked John McCain’s campaign in the 2008 election.

Kamala Harris has finalised 6 VP candidates

The Harris campaign has shortlisted six finalists to be the vice presidential nominee.

The Times and USA Today reported the six finalists as:

  • Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

  • Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota

  • Arizona Senator Mark Kelly

  • Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear

  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker

  • Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

Previously, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were also said to be popular choices, but now they are out of considerations, as per latest reports.
