Former President Donald Trump’s campaign and its affiliates announced they raised $138.7 million in July, bringing their cash on hand to $327 million as the election approaches in just over three months.

This amount surpasses the $112 million raised in June by Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee, and state parties. The July boost likely followed an assassination attempt on Trump during a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, which energised supporters, and his announcement of Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Harris far ahead of Trump

However, Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris appears to have outpaced Trump in fundraising. Following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race and endorse Harris on July 21, her campaign received $200 million in donations within the first week.

Harris’ campaign has not yet disclosed its total July fundraising figures or its current cash reserves but noted a surge in donations and volunteer support following her entry into the race.

July is expected to mark the second consecutive month that Democrats have out-raised Trump’s campaign. In June, when Biden was still the candidate, his campaign raised $127 million, ending the month with $240 million in hand, New York Times reported.

Democrat funding, rejuvenated

Some Democrats were once panicked about the party’s prospects of a November loss by President Biden. Fundraising reportedly plummeted in the first three weeks of July, in the aftermath of Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump, although exact figures remain unavailable.

Some in her party who felt like Trump was favoured in November after the 81-year-old Biden’s dismal debate performance on June 27 now see a new race with the 59-year-old Harris.

Harris will officially become the presidential nominee for her party through virtual voting by delegates at the Democratic National Convention. The process is expected to conclude on Monday (August 5), and she is also expected to announce her running mate around the same time.

The Democratic convention will kick off in Chicago on August 19.
