Vice President Kamala Harris has won enough votes to secure the Democratic Party’s nomination for the US presidential election, according to the party.

The Democratic Party made the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The announcement came as the party is conducting a virtual roll call of delegates from states across the United States.

Harris has become the first Black woman and the first woman of Indian heritage to earn the spot.

Usually, the roll call is done during the Democratic National Convention (DNC), but the party decided this year to take unusual route of finalising the nominee in a virtual roll call ahead of the DNC. Even though Harris has secured enough votes to be the nominee, the formal roll call will continue till Monday and it is only after it ends that she will be formally anointed as the party’s nominee.

Ever since taking over the race after Joe Biden’s withdrawal, Harris has been the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.

Harris faces Republican Party’s nominee Donald Trump in election slated to be held in November. For months, Trump maintained a consistent lead over Biden, but, since taking over the race, Harris has narrowed the gap consistently and the l atest poll of polls by election analysis platform 538 shows that the two are tied with odds in favour of Harris.
