Narendra Modi touched down Vienna late on Tuesday where he is going to strengthen the India-Austria bilateral relations.

Modi has the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Austria in 41 years.

PM Modi’s Austria trip holds a great significance as it coincides with 75 years of establishing bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During his two-day Vienna visit, PM Modi will meet Austria President Alexander Van der Bellen who is fondly called “VDB”.

Upon his arrival, Modi was received by Austria Chancellor of Austria Karl Nehammer who will also be accompanying the prime minister when he will address business leaders from India and Austria later on Wednesday.

The visit of PM Modi is also expected to further strengthen trade and investment as well as defence ties between India and Austria.

In May last year, both the countries had discussed enhancing bilateral ties in trade and investments, defence, consular and migration among other things.

With PM Modi heading to Vienna, the Indian Navy is getting to utilise Austria-made Unmanned Air System (UAS) for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This marks an important milestone in bilateral technological collaboration.

CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS has been developed, designed and produced by Schiebel that was founded in 1951 in Vienna.

Talking to Firstpost, Schiebel India’s CEO Jajati Mohanty said: “Austrian aerospace and security companies have been at the forefront of technological progress particularly in manufacturing, drones, space equipment, small satellites, robotics, cyber security to name a few and have built up dedicated knowledge management for ensuring consistent and quality products."

“India’s Atmanirbharta or self-reliance needs the same dedicated approach for quality and consistency in manufacturing of a product,” he further said.

“The knowledge and experience Austria has gained over the years to convert ideas to rugged products calls for areas like unmanned systems, cyber security, precision manufacturing (production engineering), robotics and space technology to be the go to sector for the start-up bridge. All these areas are very fundamental to the industry base of any country that wants to consolidate as well as forge ahead in niche products,” Mohanty further said.

The Indian Navy is using CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS for ISR to monitor the sea lane of communication in IOR and has been doing the same with unmanned systems since the beginning of 21st century using fixed wing UAVs operated from shore as well as the ships by handing over control to ships at sea.

Soon, Indian Coast Guard and Indian Army will also be using Austria-made CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS, Mohanty said, adding, “We are in the process of participating in tenders pertaining to Coast Guard and the Army which have similar requirements and specifications."
