Former US president Donald Trump has asked the New York judge who oversaw his hush money case trial to delay his sentencing until after November’s presidential election.

Trump was convicted in May of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

According to The Hill report, Judge Juan Merchan had previously agreed to push the date back until September so he can first decide if the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity decision requires tossing Trump’s guilty verdict.

“(S)etting aside naked election-interference objectives, there is no valid countervailing reason for the court to keep the current sentencing date on the calendar," The Hill quoted Trump attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove as writing to the judge, which was made public on Thursday.

“There is no basis for continuing to rush,” the letter read. “Accordingly, we respectfully request that any sentencing, if one is needed, be adjourned until after the Presidential election,” added the letter.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) has accused Trump of concealing reimbursements made to his former fixer, Michael Cohen, who paid $130,000 to porn actress Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election to keep quiet about an alleged affair. Trump, however, denies the affair and has pledged to appeal the charges.

Trump has consistently sought to delay the hush money case, along with three other criminal proceedings that have yet to go to trial.

Trump aims to win this year’s presidential election and potentially halt his indictments if he regains the White House.
