India took on Spain in the men’s hockey bronze medal match at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium. Harmanpreet Singh and Co had their task cut out following their 2-3 loss to Germany n the semi-finals. One positive for Inda was the return of defender Amit Rohidas to the playing XI, after he had been suspended for one game due to “dangerous play” against Great Britain in the quarter-finals.

Paris Olympics: News, schedule, medals tally and more

Both teams went into the first quarter break goalless, but early in the second quarter, it was Spain who led through Marc Miralles in the 18th minute. Spain’s lead was however short-lived as the experienced Harmanpreet Kaur, who has done it on multiple occasions for the team, netted two goals within a gap of just three minutes. The goals came in the 30th and 33rd minutes.

India began on a cautious note against World No 8 Spain. India began foraying into the Spanish half midway through the first quarter, but there were hardly any clear chances for India to score. India were dominant in terms of circle penetrations, managing nine of those than compared to Spain’s two in the first quarter.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter, the Indian defence line were in for a hard time. With the Spanish attack line looking desperate for an equaliser, the Indian defenders had to soak in a lot of pressure to clinch the victory. More so, it was PR Sreejesh who made few fine saves in the last couple of minutes to seal the deal for India.

Later in the day, Neeraj Chopra was in action in javelin throw final at the Stade de France. It was far from best for the 26 year-old, who endured as many as five foul throws, with only one legal throw coming in his favour.

So much so that, Nadeem finished off in style, with a throw of 91.79m in his final attempt. Grenada’s Andersen Peters won bronze with a throw of 88.54m, just a tad but more than Czechia’s Jakub Vadlejch (88.50m), who was a silver medallist in Tokyo.
