Tulika Maan, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, secured a Paris Olympics quota for India in judo, according to the international body’s list.

International Judo Federation (IJF) published a list of judokas who have qualified for the Summer Games and 25-year-old Tulika’s name featured in the +78 kg category.

Maan, who hails from Delhi, was ranked 36th with 1345 points. The qualification period was between 22 June, 2022 and 23 June, 2024.

“The next step will take place on July 2 when the NOCs (National Olympic Committees) will have to nominate which athletes will represent them, knowing that only one judoka per NOC can participate in the Games in each weight category,” the IJF said on its website.

“In other words, if a country has several judoka qualified in a given weight category, only one can be chosen to participate this summer.”

Each country can enter a maximum of 14 judokas, seven from men and women per bodyweight category. France, as hosts, received a spot in all the 14 individual events, while 15 places are entitled to the eligible NOCs through universality quotas awarded by the Tripartite Commission.

The remaining judokas underwent a qualifying process to secure a spot in their respective categories through the world rankings.

“Judo has always been full of surprises and one never knows what would happen at any point of time. So one never knows what will happen that day. Look at how I made it to Paris Olympics! But looking at my training, I am hoping I will make it the bronze medal match at least of not the final. We are training for Gold,” Tulika said after qualifying for Paris 2024.

A part of government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for some time now, she credited it for the support. “I have got a lot of assistance from TOPS. A lot of us under TOPS get assistance to compete in events through the year to sustain our rankings. When the expenses are taken care of, we can compete without tension and can give our best."

Sushila Devi Likmabam was India’s only participant in Judo at the Tokyo Olympics. She could not get past the opening round in the women’s 48kg division.
