Manu Bhaker scripted history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting. Bhaker achieved the feat by winning bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol final in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday with a final score of 221.7.
The 22-year-old from Jhajjar, Haryana thus gave India their first medal in shooting since Vijay Kumar (men’s 25m rapid pistol) and Gagan Narang (men’s 10m air rifle) had won silver and bronze respectively in the 2012 London Olympics.
South Korea secured a top-two finish in the event with Oh Ye-jin and Kim Ye-ji winning gold and silver respectively. Oh finished with an Olympic record score of 243.2 while Kim scored 241.3.

Compatriot Sandeep Singh however, bowed out of the event with a score of 629.3, finishing 12th.
Among other Indian shooters in action on Sunday, Ramita Jindal qualified for the final of the Women’s 10m air rifle event. However, Elavenil Valarivan missed out by the smallest of margins with a few errant shots in the final series.

Jindal, who won two medals at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, finished fifth with a score of 631.5. Valarivan, meanwhile, posted a score of 630.7 for the tenth place. The top eight shooters qualify for the final to be held on Monday (July 29).
In Valarivan, India got another near-miss in shooting at the Paris Olympics. Sarabjot Singh and Jindal-Arjun Babuta had faced heartbreak on the opening day of action at the Summer Games.
