It’s been more than a week since the 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off with a unique opening ceremony along the River Seine. In the nine official days of competition that have taken place since then, India have so far managed a total of three medals.
Paris Olympics: News, schedule, medals tally and more
What’s unique about this haul, though, is the fact that all of them have come from shooting — the first time India have won more than two medals in the same sport in the same Olympics.
Another first for the Indian contingent is the fact that Manu Bhaker has featured in two of those medals, in the women’s individual and mixed team 10m air pistol events, making her the first Indian athlete post-Independence and only the second overall after Norman Pritchard in Paris 1900 to win two medals in the same Olympics.
Bhaker won the mixed team bronze with Sarabjot Singh, two days after opening India’s account in the Paris Games with an individual medal of the same colour. And on Friday (August 2), 28-year-old shooter Swapnil Kusale added to the Paris medal collection by winning bronze in men’s 50m air pistol three positions.
The Indian contingent had arrived in Paris hoping to touch double-digits in their medal haul for the first time. The country’s previous biggest tally was three years ago in Tokyo with seven medals and they would have fancied their chances of going even further in the French capital.
