As Western nations consider permitting Ukraine to strike deeper inside Russian territories, Russia has warned the United States of World War III.

Invoking the threat of nuclear attacks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow that such considerations were like playing with fire.

“We are now confirming once again that playing with fire —and they are like small children playing with matches— is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country,” said Lavrov, as per Reuters.

Lavrov further invoked the possibility of World War III and said it would not be just limited to Europe.

“Americans unequivocally associate conversations about Third World War as something that, God forbid, if it happens, will affect Europe exclusively,” said Lavrov.

Lavrov’s remarks come amid calls for allowing Ukraine to use weapons provided by partners to strike deeper into Russian territories. So far, Ukraine is allowed to use missiles provided by the United States and European partners defensively and in border regions of Russia in a very limited manner. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged for permission to strike deeper inside Russia as Russia continues to strike non-combatant targets inside Ukraine.

This is not the first time that Russia has made nuclear threats amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin said it was wrong to think that Russia will never use nuclear weapons.

“For some reason, the West believes that Russia will never use it. You can’t take this lightly, superficially,” said Putin, as per NBC News.

Separately, Russian presidency’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that supplying weapons to strike inside Russia “can’t remain without consequences”.

In May, top Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia was practising the deployment of nuclear weapons to respond to any attack on its soil aided by the West. He further said any response will not be limited to Ukraine.

“Under certain circumstances the response will be delivered not only to Kiev and it won’t contain plain explosives but special ammunition as well. And to drill the response to such attacks is the aim of the planned military exercise. Even the semiliterate Imbeciles of His Royal Majesty should understand that,” said Medvedev at the time, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council and a former President (2008-12) and Prime Minister (2012-20) of Russia.
