Condemnation and prayers poured in from around the world after Former US President Donald Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania. The 2024 Republican Presidential hopeful was seen getting whisked away off stage while he was bleeding from his right ear after the attack. A spokesperson of Trump later confirmed that he was “doing fine”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first world leaders to condemn the incident. In his post on X, formally known as Twitter, PM Modi said that he was “deeply concerned” by the attack on his “friend”.

“Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him a speedy recovery,” the prime minister wrote in the post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, those injured and the American people,” he added.

Here’s a look at how the world reacted to the assassination attempt on the former President of the United States.

World Reacts

Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who are touted as “close allies” of Trump, offered prayers for the former president and his family. “My thoughts and prayers are with President @realDonaldTrump in these dark hours,” Orbán wrote in a post on X.

Earlier this week, the Hungarian premier met Trump after skipping the final day of the NATO Summit in Washington. Orban paid a highly publicised visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

My thoughts and prayers are with President @realDonaldTrump in these dark hours. 🙏

“Sara and I were shocked by the apparent attack on President Trump,” Netanyahu wrote. “We pray for his safety and speedy recovery.” The authorities stated that the 20-year-old who was involved in the shooting died at the rally.

Other leaders, like the UK’s New Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, also took time to denounce all forms of political violence.

“I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes,” Starmer said on X. “Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”

Meanwhile, the Canadian premier insisted that he was sickened by the whole ordeal. Trudeau wrote on X that his “thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans.”

“I’m sickened by the shooting at former President Trump,” Trudeau added. “It cannot be overstated — political violence is never acceptable.” It is pertinent to note that the shooting at the Trump rally came less than two months after the attempted assassination of Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico.

I’m sickened by the shooting at former President Trump. It cannot be overstated — political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also condemned the shooting incident. “We must stand firm against any form of violence that challenges democracy,” he said. In 2022, former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe was assassinated while delivering a campaign speech in the city of Nara.

We must stand firm against any form of violence that challenges democracy. I pray for former President Trump’s speedy recovery.

民主主義に挑戦する暴力には毅然と立ち向かわなければなりません。トランプ前大統領の一刻も早い回復をお祈りしています。

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also mentioned that she was following updates about Trump with “apprehension”. “My solidarity and my best wishes for a speedy recovery go to him, with the hope that the next few months of the electoral campaign will see dialogue and responsibility prevail over hatred and violence,” Meloni wrote.

Another close ally of Trump, Argentinian President Javier Milei went on to blame the “international left” for the whole incident. “I hope for the speedy recovery of President Trump and that the elections in the United States are held fairly, peacefully and democratically,” Milei averred.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s left-leaning President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the shooting unacceptable while also urging others to condemn it. “The attack against former president Donald Trump must be vehemently repudiated by all defenders of democracy and dialogue in politics. What we saw today is unacceptable,” Lula remarked.

O atentado contra o ex-presidente Donald Trump deve ser repudiado veementemente por todos os defensores da democracia e do diálogo na política. O que vimos hoje é inaceitável.
