As Donald Trump has walked out of a pre-agreed debate on ABC News, Kamala Harris has asked him to stop playing games and show up for the debate.

In recent days, Trump had repeatedly avoided stating whether he would debate Harris, the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party. He had previously agreed to a second debate with Joe Biden, before he had dropped out, on September 10 on ABC News.

Now, Trump has walked out of the ABC debate and has instead said he would debate Harris on Sept. 4 on Fox News — the conservative news channel friendly to him and the Republican Party.

In response, the Harris campaign said the only reason Trump would avoid the Sept. 10 ABC debate would be if “he’s too scared to show up”.

‘Trump is running scared’

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Harris campaign said that Trump was running scared and had reached out to Fox to bail him out.

“Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out. He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept 10. The Vice President will be there one way or the other to take the opportunity to speak to a prime time national audience,” said the Harris campaign.

Once Trump shows up for the pre-agreed Sept. 10 ABC debate, the Harris campaign would be happy to discuss further debates, said the statement.

What Trump said on quitting ABC debate

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he was walking out of the ABC debate for two reasons.

One, the debate stood terminated as it was set to be between him and Biden — not Harris.

Two, there is ongoing litigation between ABC and the channel’s journalist George Slopadopoulos which would bring in a conflict of interest.

In the announcement of the Fox debate proposal, Trump said it would be moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum and the rules would be same as the Trump-Biden debate that was earlier agreed to.

Previously, in June, Trump and Biden had debated on CNN. The debate was a disaster for Biden who struggled against Trump throughout. On multiple occasions, he appeared to lose his train of thoughts and failed to complete his sentences.

As the CNN debate turned into a colossal failure, questions about his mental and physical ability to see through another term soared and weeks of pressure from allies and donors led to his dropping out last month in favour of Harris — now the nominee of the Democratic Party.
