At a press conference at his New Jersey golf club on Thursday (August 15), former US President Donald Trump said he thinks he’s “entitled to personal attacks” on his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.

The Republican presidential nominee, responding to a question about whether his campaign needs more discipline, said, “As far as the personal attacks, I’m very angry at her because of what she’s done to the country. I’m very angry at her that she would weaponise the justice system against me and other people, very angry at her. I think I’m entitled to personal attacks.”

Trump ignores senior Republicans’ advice

Senior Republicans have advised the former president to moderate his criticism of Harris, who has pulled ahead in this year’s White House race after taking over as the Democratic party’s presidential candidate last month, Financial Times reported.

Trump appears defiant, however. “Some people say, Oh, why don’t you be nice? But they’re not nice to me. They want me to be in prison, you know,” he said at the news conference. Trump spoke against a judicial system that he insists has been “weaponised” against him by the Democratic party in an attempt at “election interference”.

Personal attacks on Harris

Trump has alleged that Harris orchestrated a “coup” to replace Biden as the Democratic candidate. He also sparked controversy by questioning her racial identity, asking “is she Black or Indian?” during an event with Black journalists.

“I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black,” he said at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.

Additionally, he has propagated conspiracy theories about Harris exaggerating the size of the crowds at her rallies.

The news conference was set up so Trump could take aim at Vice President Harris using President Joe Biden’s economic record.

“Kamala Harris is a radical California liberal who broke the economy, broke the border and broke the world, frankly,” he told reporters, adding “I don’t have a lot of respect for her intelligence and I think she’ll be a terrible president.”
