The White House condemned the “unacceptable” attacks on Palestinians by Jewish settlers that occurred in a village in the occupied West Bank, which resulted in one death and one injury. The Palestinian health ministry said a 23-year-old man was killed and another suffered critical gunshot wounds to the chest in the attack mounted by Jewish settlers on Thurday (August 15).

A spokesperson from the National Security Council said that the attacks by violent settlers against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank are unacceptable and must stop.

In the US, the National Security Council (NSC) serves as the President’s main platform for making decisions on national security and foreign policy. It involves senior national security advisors, cabinet officials, and is the primary mechanism for coordinating these policies across federal agencies.

Who are settlers in Israel?

Settlers are Israeli citizens who live on private Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The vast majority of the settlements have been built either entirely or partially on private Palestinian land.

According to Al Jazeera, more than 700,000 settlers – representing 10 percent of Israel’s nearly 7 million population – now live in 150 settlements and 128 outposts dotting the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Scale of settler violence

In the latest incident, dozens of Israeli settlers, some wearing masks, attacked a Palestinian village called Jit near the city of Qalqilya in the occupied West Bank. Footage shared on social media showed cars and houses on fire after the attacks.

According to United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there have been over 1,000 attacks by settlers against Palestinians since October, resulting in at least 1,390 people being displaced, including 660 children.

Palestinians regularly accuse Israeli security forces of standing by and allowing groups of violent settlers to attack their houses and villages. These attacks have attracted increasing concern internationally.
