While several Democratic lawmakers are calling for Biden to drop out of the race, US Republican Senator Susan Collins said that she won’t vote for former US President Donald Trump in the 2024 US Presidential Elections. Collins has been an ardent critic of Trump and did not vote for him in the 2016 or 2020 elections.

When asked who she would vote for, the longtime moderate conservative from Maine told reporters on Friday that she intended to write in former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley’s name on the ballot in November. Interestingly, during the 2016 elections, Collins voted for then-US Speaker of the House Paul Ryan instead of Trump.

Collins is the only Republican holding statewide office in the state of Maine, where Trump has won electoral vote twice. “I publicly endorsed Nikki Haley, and I wanted her to win. She’s still my favourite candidate, and I think she could do a great job. She’s my choice, and that’s how I’m going to express it,” Collins averred, WMTW-TV reported.

The Republican lawmaker made the remarks at an event in Limerick, about 34 miles west of Portland, where she was speaking at a ribbon-cutting for a new fire and emergency medical services station. After the event, Collins’ spokesperson Annie Clark reminded that the Senator has mentioned this before, including during a June television appearance.

Why Collins is not voting for Trump

During an appearance on Spectrum News in June, Collins said that she “does not support the Democratic nominee either” and supports “some of … Trump’s policies”. However, she mentioned that Trump’s style is “divisive at a time when our country is already so polarized”.

It is pertinent to note that Collins was also one of the seven Republicans who voted at the impeachment trial to convict Trump for allegedly inciting an insurrection after his supporters attacked the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

The Conservative politician was elected as the Senator back in 1996. She is the longest-serving Republican woman in the Senate. Collins herself is not on the ballot in 2024 and in 2020 she was re-elected when she defeated Democratic challenger Sara Gideon.
