4 things to know about GST Council meet on September 9

The GST Council will meet on September 9. The council is headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprises representatives of all states and the Union Territories.  

GST Council is the apex decision making body in India with regard to Goods and Services Tax (GST), which was rolled out on July 1, 2017.

“The 54th Meeting of GST Council will be held on September 9, 2024 at New Delhi,” the Council said in a post on Tuesday on X.

4 things to know about 54th meeting of GST Council 

1 - The GST Council meet is expected to discuss rate rationalisation. In the previous Council meeting on June 23, FM Sitharaman had announced that the next meeting would be on rate rationalisation.

2 - Discussion is also likely on reducing tax slabs.

3 - The Council is also expected to discuss removing duty inversion under GST.

4 - A presentation on the status of the work and aspects covered by the panel and work pending before the panel will be given by the Group of Ministers (GoM) on rate rationalism under Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sumant Chaudhary.  

In the 53rd meeting of the GST Council it was recommended waiving interest and penalties for demand notices under the CGST Act, monetary limit of Rs 20 lakh for GST Appellate Tribunal, Rs. 1 crore for High Court and Rs 2 crore for Supreme Court, for filing of appeals by the Department.

It also introduced 12 per cent GST on milk cans and carton boxes, among several other recommendations.
