A predictable love story which lacks ‘dum’

Ajay Devgn & Tabu’s Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha Movie Review

Language: Hindi

Director: Neeraj Pandey

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Jimmy Shergill, Sayaji Shinde, Saiee Manjrekar, Shantanu Maheshwari

No relationship is flawless and Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha showing Ajay Devgn, Tabu’s failed love story is no exception. No doubt the couple just looks too good together on screen, but the movie lacked meat or rather I would say the story lacked dum (strength). Old school romantic films are a pleasure to watch, but it lacked steam and most importantly, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha has completely underused seasoned actors like Ajay Devgn and Tabu.

Not complaining about the look of the film which is fantastic including the shots of the vibrant chawls and to see St Xaviers College, Bombay in its full grandeur was definitely a nostalgic feeling. The plot travels between 2001 and the present time. But the only complaint is had the filmmaker paid a little attention to the story and script, the movie could have been far better. Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha had beautiful shots, but the film wasn’t stitched well. The back and forth with flashbacks and present time made it all the more boring. I was hoping against hope that the climax is going to be different and probably will have some magical twist, but that too was predictable.

Ajay Devgn & Tabu’s Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is a love story that chronicles the lives of Krishna (Ajay Devgn) and Vasudha (Tabu) as their relationship faces numerous hardships, leading to their separation. Krishna, after committing multiple murders, is sentenced to life imprisonment. After 22 years, he is granted bail and released from jail. The story of the movie revolves around his final meeting with Vasudha. Will they end up together? Will their love survive the test of time?

The movie is about how one night completely changes the lives of Krishna and Vasudha. The plot initially will tickle your curiosity, but as the film progresses, you will realise that it is completely empty with no solid matter in it. Even the initial slow pace of the film going back to the flashback of the lead actor’s younger days after a certain point lacked sharpness. There is nothing that is intense or engaging about Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha. It is Shantanu Maheshwari’s boyish charm which adds some colour to the film, but that too gets tedious after a certain point. It could have been made into a passionate and matured romantic movie, that we rarely get to see these day, but if the story is dud with no proper plot then the film cannot shine.

A still from Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha movie

It looked like Neeraj Pandey totally failed in pulling off a romantic suspense thriller which he probably tried making. The movie lacked the steam to keep the audience engaged or glued to the screen. The story lacks the required zing which is very important for today’s audiences who have been exposed to not only Indian cinema, but world cinema too. Brilliant actors like Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Sayaji Shinde and Shantanu Maheshwari have been completely underused. And it looked like they were trying too hard to build up the suspense, but failed miserably. With such seasoned actors in the lead, you will surely come out of the cinema hall totally disappointed.
