The Kolkata rape and murder case has jolted and disappointed people across the country. And amid the shocking incident, an old video of Rani Mukerji and Deepika Padukone’s debate over women’s safety has gone viral. The actresses were a part of Rajeev Masand’s actress’ roundtable when the MeToo movement was as its peak in Bollywood

Rani Mukerji said, “I think as a woman, you have to be that powerful yourself. If you ever come to a situation like that, you have the courage to say ‘back off.’ Everything relates to what you want in your life. If they are ever in a situation like that, they should make sure that the man suffers right there and then. Either kick him between his legs or give him a jhapad of his lifetime. He will remember it and become fearful of not doing it again.”

To which Deepika replied, ““We’re now talking about self-defense. Why should it even get to that stage where I need to learn how to defend myself? All of these things are great, but nip it in the bud; that situation itself should not arise.”

Netizens react

Users have mixed reactions. One wrote- “Love how Deepika and Anushka didn’t agree to her one bit.” A second user commented, “Rani is practical here, other actresses are talking about how a normal world should be. The world is, unfortunately, not normal. It’s extremely weird and ready to eat you up at every step of the way.”
