Arcadian Movie Review: Not Nicolas Cage, it is the younger actors who stole the show | Lionsgate Play

Director: Benjamin Brewer

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Jaeden Martell, Maxwell Jenkins

A gripping tale of survival, Arcadian talks about the post-apocalyptic scenario.  There is something about movies about the apocalypse which keeps you glued to the screen. Though the film is set mostly in the night, but it is about hope and appeasement.

Nicolas Cage plays the role of a survivalist single father to twin sons. He is stern, but true to his duties. Every now then there are pounds and scratches on the doors infested with some insect. Set in Ireland, the story doesn’t really explain what is the cause of the end of this world.

We assume that an apocalyptic event has occurred leaving most of humanity near extinction. The movie starts with Paul (Nicolas Cage) running through a gate to save his twin kids. Then the movie shifts to 15-years later when Paul is seen bringing up his teenage twins Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins) and Joseph (Jaeden Martell) who are completely opposite in characters, dressing and mannerisms.

Nicolas Cage in Arcadian

Arcadian is about an insectoid monster which is super powerful and trying to take over humanity. But how you fight this insectoid monster is the question and most importantly who created it? Again what caused the end of the world is not clear.

But what actually the movie lacks is not enough meat to chew onto. The movie being extremely short neither allows the characters to evolve and there is no building up of the story. It is kind of a waste of great actors leaving the viewers hoping to see more of Cage which doesn’t happen.

Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins in Arcadian

Maxwell Jenkins and Jaeden Martell’s performances are brilliant and to some extent their performances overshadow Cage. Again, the movie is based more on assumptions, making you wonder whether Paul (Nicolas Cage) is the one who caused the end of the world. There is not much explanation as to what caused the end of the world.
