Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Paris Olympics medallist Sarabjot Singh via a phone call on Tuesday after the latter clinched bronze in the 10m mixed team air pistol competition along with Manu Bhaker as his partner. The duo beat South Korea’s Oh Ye-jin and Lee Wonho 16-10 in the bronze medal match.

This was India’s second medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, after Bhaker won a historic bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol tournament on Sunday.

PM Modi lauded the duo’s splendid teamwork and was eager to know the reason behind the same. “The way you and Manu have performed, you two showed some great teamwork. What was the reason behind that?,” he asked.  “Since 2019 we have been playing together in nationals, junior World Cups and other World Cups, we are hoping that we win Gold next time,” the athlete who hails from Haryana responded.

Sarabjot was off to a slow start, striking just 8.6 in his opening shot, whereas Bhaker registered a score of 10.2. That meant India’s aggregate score was 18.2 than compared to Korea’s aggregate total of 20.5, which helped them take a 2-0 lead.

Bhaker, however, showcased consistency and so did Sarabjot, who like Bhaker, registered shots of 10 and more, barring just a few occasions. The Indians were soon up 8-2, and from then on, it was a walk in the park. Bhaker’s next competition is the Women’s 25m Air Pistol qualification event on Friday (2 August).
