'She did our film before Heeramandi and...'

Aditya Sarpotdar has all the reasons to be on cloud nine as his last theatrical release Munjya stormed the box-office and his new film Kakuda is now streaming on Zee5.

In a recent interview with Firstpost, the filmmaker not only spoke about Munjya but made some revelations about Kakuda too.

When asked about shooting the film at nights, Aditya revealed, “Out of 35 nights, Riteish had 23 of them. And we shot the film on a lot of nights, but they had their fair share of days. He had his his lesser share of days and most nights. But that’s the fun of it. Now you kind of bring the ghost out in the night. Your imagination runs wild in the darkness. And when you have these characters coming together, fighting the ghost, and doing all kinds of crazy things, the night kind of lends itself so beautifully to the whole environment. I think, 75% of the shoot was nights.

On the star-cast of the film

We wrote the script and it out and we wanted to kind of get the right casting. We wanted a unique cast, a group of people who have done a bit of comedy before but not explored a horror comedy. Definitely, actors who were established, who were good at their at their craft and also, because, you see, now Sonakshi’s character has a double role. So when we approached her, she had not done Heeramandi. So for us, it was like a very unique in the film. Also the fact that she plays a character who wants to save her husband. So for me, it was something that really went well with the way I felt that she could do carried really well.

Saqib, I’ve always seen him as somebody who’s doing this macho hero, the urban guy. I wanted to switch that by giving him some the character who’s extremely timid and not his otherwise personality. And Riteish had never done horror comedies. He’d done so many comedies and a look that was very cool and a look that I am sure he could carry.

On the horror genre

I believe that in this genre, you also are using the craft of storytelling. You’re using sound. You’re using visuals. The craft has to be really mastered. Like, I remember watching this Hindi film called Mahal. And I do believe that such films trend set the trend then. Nobody followed them a lot. And then the Ramsays came, and they really kind of would blew the genre out into a very massy genre. So they have a really big role to play in the horror genre. In the horror comedy space, I do feel that we didn’t try out a lot of this such films. And Bhool Bhulaiyaa was the only film that I do have a reference to, which is one of my first horror comedies that I remember going to theatres and watching.
