FM Sitharaman presenting the Union Budget 2024 in India's parliament.

In the Union Budget for 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has laid out a comprehensive plan to strengthen India’s energy security.

This plan includes several new policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing energy sustainability and supporting both households and industries. Here’s a breakdown of the key announcements in the energy sector:

1. A new policy document has been introduced to outline clear pathways for India’s energy future. This document will guide the India’s transition to more sustainable and secure energy sources, focusing on reducing dependency on non-renewable resources.

2. The PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana has been launched to support the installation of rooftop solar panels. This scheme aims to provide free electricity up to 300 units per month for one crore households. The initiative has received a remarkable response from the public, reflecting strong interest in renewable energy solutions.

3. A new Pump Storage Policy has been announced to boost the use of pump storage systems. These systems are essential for managing the supply and demand of electricity by storing energy during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak times.

4. The government is investing in newer nuclear technologies to enhance energy production. This includes the development of advanced nuclear reactors that are more efficient and safer, contributing to a cleaner energy mix.

5. To improve efficiency in coal-based power generation, the budget includes plans to set up 800 MW Advanced Ultra Super Critical (AUSC) thermal power plants. These plants will use cutting-edge technology to generate electricity more efficiently and with reduced emissions.

6. There is a strong focus on developing indigenous energy technology. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology and build local capabilities in energy production and management.

7. Micro and small industries will receive enhanced support through various energy-related initiatives. This support will help these industries adopt energy-efficient technologies and reduce their operational costs.

The Union Budget 2024, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, continues to focus on enhancing India’s infrastructure and economic growth. The energy sector’s new policies are designed to address the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions and reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
