With the entire country celebrating the 78th Independence Day of India on Thursday, the sportspersons took the lead on social media to wish their fellow compatriots. A few Olympians were also honoured at the Red Fort during the Independence Day celebration.

India won six medals at the recently-concluded Paris Olympics 2024 including one silver and five bronze medals.

The Independence Day celebration in Delhi was attended by medal winners Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals in shooting, and members of the bronze medal-winning Indian hockey team including PR Sreejesh and Harmanpreet Singh.

PM Narendra Modi congratulated the athletes during his Independence Day speech.

“Today, we also have with us the youth who made the Indian flag fly high in the Olympics. On behalf of 140 crore countrymen, I congratulate all our athletes and players,” he said.

He also extended his wishes to the Indian para-athletes who will take part in the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8 in Paris.

“In the next few days, a huge Indian contingent will leave for Paris to participate in the Paralympics. I extend best wishes to all our Paralympians,” he added.

PM Modi shared his vision for the 2036 Olympics bid as well and said that it is the “dream of India”.

“It is the dream of India to host the 2036 Olympics, we are making preparations for that,” Modi said in his address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day.

Here’s how Indian sportspersons celebrated Independence Day on X:

Sportspersons aren't the only ones playing for India. Every Indian who does their job with honesty and sincerity is a key player for Team India. So, when the national anthem plays today, know that it's for you, and I hope you'll feel the same way I did when I heard it every time…
