The Paris Olympics 2024 is set to make history as the first Olympic Games to achieve full gender parity in athlete participation. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been working towards this goal for several years, and Paris 2024 will mark a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality in sports.

The percentage of female participants at the Olympic Games has increased over the years, starting at 2.2% in 1900, when women competed for the first time, 23 percent at Los Angeles 1984, 44 percent at London 2012 and rising to 48% in Tokyo 2020.

While exact numbers may fluctuate slightly as qualifications continue, the organisers aim to have an equal number of male and female athletes competing. This means approximately 5,250 men and 5,250 women will participate, totaling around 10,500 athletes.

“We are about to celebrate one of the most important moments in the history of women at the Olympic Games, and in sport overall,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

“We are looking forward to Paris 2024, where we will see the results of the enormous efforts made by the Olympic Movement and female trailblazers come to life. This is our contribution to a more gender-equal world,” Bach added.

This balance will be reflected across most sports, with adjustments made to event quotas to ensure equal representation. Some traditionally male-dominated sports will see an increase in female participants, while others may see a slight reduction in male quotas to achieve parity.

The equal representation extends beyond just numbers. Paris 2024 will also feature more mixed-gender events than any previous Olympics, further promoting gender equality in competition.

The initiatives, as per IOC, include:

  • a more gender-balanced sports programme, with 28 out of 32 sports fully gender equal in Paris.

  • a more gender-balanced number of medal events, with the Paris 2024 schedule comprising 152 women’s events, 157 men’s events and 20 mixed-gender events.

This commitment to gender parity not only promotes fairness but also inspires future generations of athletes, regardless of gender, to pursue their Olympic dreams.
