Neeraj Chopra who clinched the top prize at the 2022 Diamond League and finished second-best last year, will look to seal his place in the summit contest this year in Lausanne on Thursday.

During the 2022 Diamond League competition, he won the final with a throw of 88.44m and became the first Indian to win the Diamond League finals and qualified for the 2023 World Championships in the process.

At the 2023 Diamond League finals, Neeraj’s throw of 83.80m was not enough to make him champion again. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic sealed the title with a throw of 84.24m.

On the back of Paris Olympics and a silver medal, Neeraj Chopra will look to keep the run going and qualify for the finals.

As things stand, Neeraj is on seven points in the Diamond League rankings for javelin throw to occupy fourth spot. He took seven points in Doha where he finished second with a throw of 88.36m - just 2cms short of Vadlejch.

Neeraj didn’t collect any points in Paris, the second of four Diamond League meetings featuring javelin throw, claiming it wasn’t part of his competition calendar. There had been speculation that he had withdrawn from the event.

Vadlejch is in top spot in the Diamond League standings for javelin throw with 14 points, just ahead of Anderson Peters of Grenada and Julian Weber of Germany is third (eight points). Neeraj is fourth, level with Andrian Mardare of Moldova. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, who will skip the Lausanne Diamond League, is sixth with five points.

After Lausanne, Zurich (5 September) is the last stop in adding points to the tally to qualify for the Diamond League final in Brussels on 13-14 September.

The top six in the Diamond League standings after the four meets qualify for the final.

At the Paris Olympics, Neeraj won the silver medal with a season-best throw of 89.45m and became India’s most successful individual Olympian.
