Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday personally called Manu Bhaker and praised the shooter for winning India’s first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. PM Modi said that Bhaker’s success was even more special as she is the first woman to win a medal in shooting for India.

Manu Bhaker clinched a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday in the Paris Games to end India’s 12-year wait for a shooting medal in the Olympics while also becoming the first female shooter from the country to finish on the podium.

“Huge congratulations to you. I am very excited and happy after hearing about your success,” Modi said on the call. “You lost silver by 0.1 but you have made India proud. You should be credited for two things: you won bronze and also you are the first female shooter to win an Olympic medal for India. A lot of congratulations from my side. Last time in the Tokyo Olympics your pistol betrayed you but this time you have compensated for everything.”

“I have full confidence you will do very well. The beginning is so well that this will motivate you and India will also benefit from there.” PM Modi replied.

PM Modi finished by saying that the shooter has his blessings.

“Lots of blessings from my end. Thank you.”

Also going viral on social media is a video of Bhaker’s interaction with PM Modi before leaving for the Paris Olympics in which she credited the Indian government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India initiative for her rise in the sport of shooting.
