India at Paris Olympics, Day 14 LIVE: Vinesh Phogat appeal against CAS

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has spoken out after Vinesh Phogat was denied a silver medal. He’s slammed the decision for “defying logic and sporting sense”.

Hesaid: “Time for an Umpire’s Call! Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight, was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense. It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance enhancing drugs. In that case, to not be awarded any medal and be placed last would be justifiable. However, Vinesh beat her opponents fairly to reach the top two. She definitely deserves a silver medal. While we all wait for a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, 1et us hope and pray that Vinesh gets the recognition she deserves.”

India at Paris Olympics, Day 14 LIVE: Imane Khelif in boxing final today

Algeria’s boxer Imane Khelif is one victory away from wrapping up her tumultuous Paris Olympics with a gold medal around her neck — a potential prize that she has called the best response to a cascade of online abuse she has endured over misconceptions about her gender.

Khelif fights Yang Liu of China tonight in the final of the women’s welterweight division. Khelif has yet to lose a round on a judge’s scorecard in her first three fights in Paris, going on the most dominant run of her boxing career while facing an extraordinary amount of scrutiny.

The issue stems from Khelif and fellow two-time Olympian Li Yu-ting of Taiwan getting disqualified from last year’s world championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA), which claims both fighters failed a murky eligibility test for women’s competition.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) took the unprecedented step last year of permanently banning the IBA from the Olympics following years of concerns about its governance, competitive fairness and financial transparency. The IOC has called the arbitrary sex tests that the sport’s governing body imposed on the two boxers irretrievably flawed

India at Paris Olympics, Day 14 LIVE: Vinesh Phogat appeal at CAS

CAS has issued a media release on the application filed by Vinesh Phogat.

It reads: “The Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered the following new procedure:

CAS OG 24/17 Vinesh Phogat v. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

“An application was filed at the CAS Ad hoc Division at 16:45 CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her, because of her failed second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence at 18:15 CEST the same day (the Challenged Decision).

The Applicant initially sought a decision from the CAS Ad hoc Division annulling the Challenged Decision and ordering another weigh-in before the final match as well as a declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final. However, she did not request urgent interim measures.

The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged Decision and that she requests to be awarded a (shared) silver medal.

The matter has been referred to the Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS), sitting as a Sole Arbitrator, who will hold a hearing with the parties today. The Sole Arbitrator’s decision is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games.”

India at Paris Olympics, Day 14 LIVE: IOA statement on Vinesh's CAS appeal

IOA have issued a statement on Vinesh Phogat’s CAS appeal: “Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to be awarded the silver medal in the Women’s Wrestling 50kg competition in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be represented by renowned senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania before the Court of Arbitration for Sport ad hoc division at 2-00 p.m. today.

The Indian Olympic Association is assisting Vinesh Phogat with her appeal after she was disqualified from the competition for being 100gm over the stipulated 50kg on the second day of her competition. She had made the weight on the first day and won three bouts on her way to the final.

United World Wrestling (UWW) competition rules stipulate that a wrestler’s results would be annulled if he (or she) does not make the weight on either day of competition. IOA President Dr. PT Usha and Wrestling Federation of India President Sanjay Singh had requested UWW President Nenad Lalovic on Wednesday to not annul Vinesh’s results from the first day.”

India at Paris Olympics, Day 14 LIVE: Neeraj Chopra after clinching silver medal

The javelin thrower spoke to JioCinema after winning silver on Thursday evening. He said:

On LA 2028: ‘It’s not about the medal but about the distance. I think I have a lot more to show. I don’t have a problem with the silver medal, and 89.45m is a good throw, but until I am satisfied with my distance, I can’t be happy. There are many competitions before LA, and I hope I can increase the distance and fly the country’s flag as high as possible. Whenever the flag is in my hand, I feel proud, whether I win a medal or not, for bringing the flag to a sport like this that many didn’t know about.’

On winning silver: ‘I’d like to thank everyone for their support. What I had hoped isn’t the result we got. My training is being interrupted by the injuries I’ve faced. I’m forcing my throws through because I’m not getting my runway right, which is the most important factor in the sport. I haven’t been able to train much due to my groin injury, but I know what all we need to work on. I need to mend my injury first. If you keep trying to push through it, the injury can worsen. We’ll work on this, and there’s a lot more to come. I tried my best and believed in my second throw, but I just didn’t get the runway I needed. Arshad’s throw was phenomenal; I’d like to congratulate him and Pakistan. He and I have always been great competitors, and this is the first time he’s had the chance to win Gold. We should encourage athletes who work hard. I’m happy to have brought another medal to India, but a lot more work needs to be done.’
