What changed from seven medals to six

India won six medals at the Paris Olympics - matching the tally of London 2012. PTI

The difference from the Tokyo Olympics three years ago to the Paris Games that concluded on Sunday may just be one medal from an Indian standpoint, but it should be seen as an opportunity lost to do better. From seven medals won at the Tokyo Olympics, India’s tally dropped to six - one silver and five bronze - at Paris 2024.

Even if Vinesh Phogat’s appeal goes her way, the tally will only match Tokyo 2020 which points at stagnation, not growth.

For now, with six medals, none of them gold, India finished 71st in the medal tally.

At Tokyo 2020, India won seven medals - one gold, two silver and four bronze - for a 48th place finish.

Contingent size

India had sent 119 athletes to Tokyo 2020. They competed in 65 medal events across 18 sports.

This time, India’s contingent size was of 117 athletes. They took part in 69 medal events across 16 sports.

Medal winners

At Tokyo 2020, India won two medals in wrestling (Ravi Dahiya, Bajrang Punia), one in athletics (Neeraj Chopra), one in boxing (Nikhat Zareen), one in badminton (PV Sindhu), one in weightlifting (Mirabai Chanu) and one in hockey (men’s team).

At Paris 2024, India won three medals in shooting (Manu Bhaker, Manu Bhaker-Sarabjot Singh, Swapnil Kusale), one in hockey (men’s team), one in athletics (Neeraj Chopra) and one in wrestling (Aman Sehrawat).

Where did India’s tally go down?

With India matching the tally from London 2012, India witnessed no badminton medals for the first time since 2012.

Additionally, there were six medals ‘missed’ with athletes finishing fourth.

Mirabai Chanu couldn’t lift 114kgs successfully and missed out by two kgs in weightlifting. Arjun Babuta (Men’s 10m air rifle shooting), Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat (mixed team event in archery), Manu Bhaker (women’s 25m pistol), Lakshya Sen (men’s badminton singles) and Maheshwari Chauhan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka (skeet mixed team) were the others who missed podium by slimmest of margins.

In comparison, the only big medal ’lost’ with such tough luck at Tokyo Olympics was Aditi Ashok’s collapse on the final day of the women’s golf.

Contrary to our prediction, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, Antim Panghal, Lovlina Borgohain, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Nikhat Zareen didn’t get on the podium.
