Traditional Indian saree will be be back as the country’s official ceremonial uniform during the upcoming Paris Olympics. India’s female athletes had also worn a saree during the 2016 Olympics - held in Rio de Janeiro.

As per a Times of India report, the women will wear standalone pre-pleated ikat printed sarees. Ikat involves printing woven fabric by tie-dyeing the warp yarns.

The saree will be matched with a blouse pocket, with IOA’s insignia, a saffron colour blouse to indicate strength and courage.

The men will wear traditional kurta-pyjamas in Paris, which will be paired with jackets with the official IOA insignia. The jackets will go with printed lower panels, cargo pockets and tape detail paired with kurta and trouser.

Both dresses will be of pure cotton fabric with an ivory colour design, which will serve the purpose of dealing with sweltering summer temperatures, ensuring that the athletes remain comfortable throughout the day.

Additionally, the dresses will have the impression of the tricolour, with the female athletes clubbing saffron colour blouses, while integrating green and orange ikat printed panels and tapes.

The men will have tricolour printed on the tape and lower panels of their open bandi jacket.

The button holes will be of blue colour, represent the Ashoka Chakra, a prominent feature of the flag.

Eight years ago, the athletes had worn uncoordinated blue blazers in Brazil.

Saree as ceremonial attire was discontinued before the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and Asian Games in Jakarta/Palembang. In Tokyo during the 2020 Olympics, rescheduled for a year later, women wore traditional golden salwar suits with jackets while men wore bandhgalas.

The designs were approved by the Indian Olympic Association on Tuesday, said the report, after the government’s push to go traditional.

On previous occasions, India’s male athletes had either donned blazers or bandhgalas over matching formal trousers, with head turbans.
