Come the 2024 Paris Olympics, India will embark on a new journey as they aim to scale new heights at the Games. Over the years, India have produced several iconic Olympic jerseys and those kits have assumed great significance as the athletes look to give their best in every edition, aiming to cherish their dreams of winning that Olympic medal and thus bringing joy to the millions of Indian citizens. This year, it will be no different.

What does the Indian kit for the Paris Olympics signify?

A total of three kits were launched during the athletes’ send-off ceremony in June. The playing kit is designed by JSW Inspire, the ceremonial dress has been designed by Tarun Tahiliani, a famous fashion designer who co-owns TASVA with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail group. “The design of the Team India’s playing kit showcases the confidence, versatility and ferocity of the terrains of our mighty nation. With each contour and flow echoing the resilience of our landscapes, that is fierce, embodying the indomitable spirit of our athletes. It’s more than just fabric, it’s a symbol of pride, woven with the spirit of India’s champions,” a press release by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs said.

According to the playing kit designers, the new threads are a representation of the nation’s heart and soul. “The Team India Olympic Kit is about more than just clothes. India’s diverse landscapes, with its mountains, plains, rivers - they’ve shaped us for centuries. They’re in our spirit, our songs, even our national anthem. Our athletes, too, are shaped by this diversity. Their victories represent India’s strength. Our designs pay homage to this determination.”

Apart from the playing jersey, a ceremonial dress was also launched at the athletes’ send-off ceremony ahead of Paris Olympics. PTI

Tarun Tahiliani, who made the ceremonial dress spoke in detail about the dress. “This ceremonial dress beautifully combines classic Indian style with a modern, athletic touch. The kurta bundi set is crafted from lightweight moss cotton, ensuring breathability and comfort. The saree, a symbol of grace and cultural identity, is reimagined in viscose crepe for a natural drape and breathability, ensuring our athletes feel both elegant and comfortable,” he said.

Mandaviya said that the kits were a symbol of the dreams and aspirations of all Indian citizens. “This event is not just about the unveiling of uniform and ceremonial dress but a symbol of the dreams and aspirations of billions of Indians who stand united behind the athletes,” he said at the event.

“I am confident that this contingent will sustain India’s growth trajectory in sports. We saw a spurt from two medals in Rio 2016 to seven in Tokyo 2020 as India rose from 67th to 48th, helped in the main by Neeraj Chopra’s Javelin Throw gold medal. I am hoping that our athletes will take us even higher on the medal table this time,” he added.

IOA president PT Usha said that the athletes would be given full support during the course of the Paris Olympics. We have drawn up a very athlete-centric plan to support our athletes to perform at their peak in Paris,” she said.

“We have assembled a strong team under Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala’s leadership. It includes sports medicine experts, wellness specialists, nutritionists, physiotherapists and a sleep scientist,” Usha added.
