The executive council members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) are set to receive a dearness allowance of $300 per day (Rs 25,023) for five days during the 2024 Paris Olympics. That amount is an increase from the $150 per day (Rs 12,511) that the executive council members were paid during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

However, the Indian athletes will continue to receive $50 (Rs 4,170), which has not changed from the Tokyo Olympics, according to a report in The Tribune. The report added that the executive council members will also get $1000 (Rs 83,410) for the five days.

An executive council meeting was held on 26 December, a few days after PT Usha had taken over as the new president of IOA. The decision to revise the dearness allowance was taken during that meeting. In a bid to balance the expenses, the IOA has decided that they will pay the athletes a participation allowance of Rs 2  lakh, whereas the coaches and the support saff will receive Rs 1 lakh each. The IOA, though, will not have to carry the entire burden of the expenses, with the Sports Ministry set to cover a portion of these costs.

The new budget estimate, however, has created some controversy among the divided executive council. PT Usha, in her letter to the executive members, asked them to provide a concurrence on the budget estimate.

“…I kindly request your concurrence on these budget estimates to facilitate timely implementation and smooth execution of our plans. You will notice that this also includes the funds that are sanctioned by the Government of India in support of our teams. Your prompt review and approval will be highly appreciated, as it will enable us to proceed without any delays,” PT Usha wrote.

Sahadev Yadav, IOA treasurer, has suggested on holding a meeting of the executive council to discuss the issue regarding budget estimates.

“…As the matter concerns financial approval for the Paris Olympic Games, it is my humble suggestion to call an executive committee meeting of Indian Olympic Association to finalise the budget estimates for Paris Olympic Games 2024,” Sahadev wrote.

The Paris Olympics is scheduled to be held between 26 July to 11 August.
