Blake Lively starrer romantic drama explores dark human aspects but lacks conviction

Cast: Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj and Amy Morton

Director: Justin Baldoni

Colleen Hoover’s best-selling 2016 novel ‘It Ends With Us’ is regarded as a cult among book lovers. So, when the announcement of its movie adaptation happened, it created humongous excitement among ardent fans of the novel. While the trailer received a huge thumbs up among the audience, did the film impress the cinegoers? Let’s find out…

The plot starts with Lily Bloom (Blake Lively) coming to her hometown after the demise of his father, who used to domestic abuse her mother. Lily shifts to Boston to fulfil her dream of opening her flower shop. After the emotional turmoil at her estranged father’s funeral, Lily goes to the rooftop of a building where she meets a charming neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni, who also directs the film).

After sharing naked truths about each other, the duo gets attracted to each other. In the parallel track, we see the flashback of younger Lily, who falls for a homeless guy and his schoolmate Atlas. Lily’s father catches her and Atlas while making and hits him badly.

Cut to the present time, Lily and Ryle are going with the flow and they fall in love with each other. At one night, Lily, Ryle along with his sister and brother-in-law go to a restaurant to celebrate Ryle’s big successful surgery. In the restaurant, Lily finds Atlas (Brandon Sklenar) and as they recognise each other, they go to one aloof corner to talk about their life. Ryle sees them and the misunderstanding of the situation creates a rift.

Post, there are situational misunderstandings to show how Ryle is a red flag guy and delves into complex human emotions related to romance, domestic violence, confusion and a lot more.

However, the biggest problem of the movie, is that it failed to strike the chord due to half-baked narratives lacking the depth and back-stories of the situations. More than hits, we see misses from the director.

Talking about the performances, Blake Lively shines bright nailing every emotion with finesse. Justin Baldoni perfectly carries the charm with a dilution of menace with his charisma. Brandon Sklenar is superb as Atlas, however he should have got more of screentime.

On the whole, It Ends With Us could have turned out to be a masterpiece but chose to be an average affair
