'I do feel responsible that the film...'

With Laapataa Ladies, filmmaker  Kiran Rao returned to direction after 14 years.  Laced with humour, Laapataa Ladies made us believe that we should never stop being hopeful and make the best use of the circumstances that we are often pushed into. The film stresses on the importance of women’s independence.

The film got more appreciation on the digital platform than when it was released in the theatres. And that’s mostly because the OTT viewing audiences are much more evolved and they have a taste for world cinema.

In an interview with Faye D’Souza, she opened up on its commercial performance and stated, “In some ways, both these films (Dhobi Ghat and Laapataa Ladies) haven’t done great at the box office. Dhobi Ghat, in fact, did some big business for its time. Ten-15 years later, Laapataa Ladies didn’t do that much more than Dhobi Ghat. So, in some ways, I do feel that sense of failure. By box office metrics, we weren’t a success. In the conventional sense, we didn’t do hundreds of crores, or even 30, 40, 50 crore.”

She added, “Failure is the way to put it. I do feel responsible that the film didn’t do that well at the box office. I felt it a lot during Dhobi Ghat because we didn’t have any alternate mediums, we didn’t have OTT. So it didn’t get a lot of audience. I do feel that film was different for its time, and very unusual for a theatrical release back then. But other than that, not really. I haven’t felt a deep sense of having failed at something.”

In the past, we have seen many movies turning out to be a surprise hit on OTT after garnering desirable numbers at the box office. And the latest case is Kiran Rao’s directorial Laapataa Ladies, which surpassed the viewership of Ranbir Kapoor starrer global blockbuster Animal.

The Aamir Khan production venture, which premiered on Netflix about two months ago garnered 13.8 million views and outperformed the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial, which had got 13.6 million views in the first three weeks before dropping out of the top 10 in week four.
